What does every Masters champion in history have in common?
As the Masters celebrates its 85th birthday, it’s safe to say a lot has changed since the inaugural tournament.
The attire, equipment, prize money and layout of Augusta are all notably different from 1934. However, one theme has remained consistent throughout – the elite quality of golf on show.
To pay homage, Golf Care has created an interactive website called ‘What Makes A Masters Champion’, which calculates the average profile of a Masters winner using 85 years of data.
This winning formula combines a variety of personal and performance statistics, including the champion’s age, weight, driving distance, GIR %, and fairways hit %.
Visitors can view each individual winner’s card and can relive their iconic victories by watching footage from past tournaments.
Using the formula behind an average Master’s champion, Golf Care predicted which 10 British golfers are most likely to win this year’s tournament, based on what they had in common with past victors.
Former Europe Ryder Cup Captain and Golf Care ambassador Bernard Gallacher, who played in the 1970 Masters, said: “I’ve been lucky enough to compete with some true Masters icons, and what makes them so unique is their extraordinary performance statistics and their ability to handle pressure, particularly when it gets to the back nine.
“Looking at Golf Care’s data, it’s quite incredible the sort of numbers which are needed to win the Masters. It just goes to show why this tournament is so prestigious, because it’s so difficult to win.
“Anyone who’s anyone in golf has won the Masters. This website confirms that and is a must for any golf enthusiast.”
As well as exploring the average stats of a Masters champion and seeing which British golfers are most likely to win this year’s tournament, visitors explored how much the most difficult holes on Augusta’s back nine have changed over the years.
They can also pit iconic winners against each other to see who would win based on their Masters performances. Hypothetical play-offs include Tiger Woods v Jack Nicklaus, Sergio Garcia v Seve Ballesteros and Ben Hogan v Sam Snead.
