The 8 best touring caravan sites in Yorkshire

Following their pandemic boom, touring caravan holidays are a travel trend seemingly here to stay. In fact, touring caravans are the most popular leisure accommodation vehicle in the UK, according to data from the NCC.

As the UK’s largest county, Yorkshire is renowned for many things. However, caravan holidays aren’t necessarily one of them.

But with gorgeous beaches, harbours, coastlines, and some of the most idyllic countryside in the UK, there’s a lot to be said for pitching your tourer here. You might be pleasantly surprised by how many beautiful touring caravan sites Yorkshire has to offer.

Whether you’re actively planning a trip to God’s own country this year or merely researching, we’ve rounded up 8 of the best touring caravan sites in Yorkshire to whet your appetite.

Bay Ness Farm, Whitby

Open from: mid-April to late-September

Bay Ness Farm is just above Robin Hood’s Bay, with jaw-dropping panoramic sea and coastal views you won’t want to leave behind.

If there’s nothing you love more than a long walk with salty sea air to blow away the cobwebs, follow the nearby Cleveland Way and enjoy coast-to-coast routes from the bay.

Old cobbled streets and quaint tea rooms dot the local area, and you can even visit Whitby Harbour for boat trips.

The touring pitches at Bay Ness Farm are on grass but boast their own electricity connection if required. BBQs are also welcome, providing caravanners ensure they’re raised off the ground—so you’ll want to remember to bring some wood and a few marshmallows to toast!

For sun, sea, sand, and even sheep, Bay Ness Farm is the one.

Flower of May, Scarborough

Open from: March to October

Scarborough—or ‘Scarbados’, as it’s known affectionately to locals and holiday-goers—is the perfect place for a caravan holiday in Yorkshire. Situated on the North Yorkshire coast, Scarborough is known for its award-winning beaches, family attractions, and, of course, its fish and chips.

Flower of May Touring Park, just south of Scarborough, boasts a fabulous coastal location with a range of touring caravan pitches ideal for a relaxing getaway.

The park is set in a beautifully quiet, cliff-top location with gorgeous views towards the Yorkshire Wolds. The nearby towns of Filey and Bridlington are also well worth a visit if you fancy venturing beyond Scarborough while you’re here.

The touring caravan pitches are set in designated avenues with superb on-site facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and an entertainment complex.

Butt Farm, Beverley

Open from: April to October (grass pitches). Hardstanding open all year round

Butt Farm, in East Yorkshire, is set within 180 acres of land and is home to various animals, including sheep, cattle, chickens and goats—and even Tiger, the farm cat.

The farm’s owners, Oly and Jen, opened a caravan and camping site on the farm in 2016 and have watched it grow from strength to strength ever since.

With gorgeous open views over the nearby countryside, Butt Farm is without a doubt one of the best touring caravan sites in Yorkshire—and it has the gongs to prove it. Butt Farm won a RETYA (Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award) in 2017 and was a finalist in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The farm boasts 30 touring pitches and a modern amenities block powered by an eco-friendly, renewable biomass boiler. There’s even a charging point for electric bikes, so there’s no need to leave those at home either!

Upwood Holiday Park, Haworth

Open from: March to January

Upwood Holiday Park in Haworth, West Yorkshire (home of the famous Brontë sisters) is a family-friendly caravan holiday destination suitable for all ages.

The park currently holds a 4* rating from Visit England, as well as a David Bellamy Conservation Award.

Touring caravanners have a choice of around 75 pitches here, including both hardstanding and grass, all of which come with electrical hook-up points. Additional facilities include heated toilet and shower blocks and even an on-site launderette.

Upwood is close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland—an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of day trips on your doorstep. Bradford is also a mere 30-minute drive, too, if you fancy a break from the park and a day in the city.

Orcaber Farm, Settle

Open all year round

Orcaber Farm is nestled away in the aforementioned Forest of Bowland AONB, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

This peaceful, family-run site is also close to the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks and the Ingleton Waterfalls trail, so if you’re into your walks, look no further.

The farm’s touring pitches are a choice of grass or hardstanding, with electricity hook-ups also available should you require them. Some of the hardstanding pitches, in particular, also come equipped with freshwater taps, too.

Picnic benches are also dotted around the site, providing a relaxing, scenic location for a spot of lunch without even having to venture out.

However, should you decide to explore the local area, Settle itself is a quaint market town famous for its museums, traditional railways, cycle paths, and quirky independent shops. You certainly won’t be left struggling for things to do.

Flaxton Meadows, York

Open from: March to late-October

Bordered by gorgeous North Yorkshire farmland just eight miles out from York city centre, Flaxton Meadows is in the ideal spot for a peaceful caravan retreat.

This eco-friendly, adult-only touring park is perfect for a quiet getaway. All of the touring pitches here are incredibly spacious—with some of the hardstanding pitches, in particular, beautifully secluded thanks to the surrounding evergreen trees.

Flaxton Meadows is also home to various animals and wildlife, including hens, ducks and even hedgehogs—so you’re in pleasant company.

Those that have visited York before need no reminding of its splendour either. This famous old city is one of the brightest jewels in the Yorkshire crown—it’s no wonder people flock from all corners of the UK to experience it.

York is perfect for a romantic day or evening out as a couple if you fancy a change of scene from the caravan.

Primrose Valley, Filey

Open from: March to November

Like your activities? Look no further if so.

Touring caravan sites don’t come much more action-packed than Haven’s Primrose Valley in Filey, near Scarborough. There’s plenty for all the family to do here. Whether it’s swimming, footgolf, archery, kayaking, aerial assault courses, or even pottery painting—you’ll find it at Primrose Valley.

The park is one of the largest touring caravan sites in Yorkshire, situated on the Hunmanby Gap, with its long sandy beach—also accessible via the park.

Set high above the beach, Primrose Valley boasts some of the best sea views the Yorkshire coastline has to offer. Looking out towards Filey Brigg—a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI)—and the Bempton Cliffs, it comes as no surprise this park is so popular among caravanners.

Hillside Caravan Park, Thirsk

Open from: February to January

Hillside Caravan Park is a small, family-run, award-winning park in North Yorkshire, catering for up to 50 touring caravans at a time.

The park is located just outside the village of Knayton, near the market town of Thirsk. Despite its size, you’ll find fantastic facilities here, and be perfectly placed to explore some of the region’s most renowned tourist spots, such as the North York Moors National Park.

Though some grass pitches are available, most of the caravan pitches here are hardstanding on gravel. They also have water and electricity hook-up points, as well as TV aerial connections.

The park is on the doorstep of the Hambleton Hills, too, which, besides offering outstanding views from the comfort of your caravan, are also great for a day out walking.
