Martial Arts Insurance
Why do I need specialist martial arts insurance?
The sport of martial arts covers a wide range of fighting disciplines, from Karate to Judo to Kendo and Taekwondo, all of which take many years to master. Martial arts are amazing for self-defence, fitness, and self-awareness, but these competitive combat sports are undeniably dangerous and can trigger various injuries.
If you’re an instructor and a student sustains an injury in your class and holds you responsible, Public Liability is essential. If you’re a martial artist, you need Personal Accident cover to make sure you’re compensated should you suffer a serious injury and require treatment.
We insure participants and instructors, allowing you to block and punch whilst putting your best foot forward.

What does martial arts insurance cover?
Public Liability cover against injury or property damage:
Coaches always need to be careful when teaching and practising martial arts, as students can get injured, sometimes seriously, if practised improperly. You’ll know the importance of teaching your students correctly and in a safe manner, but accidents can happen that are out of your control.
If a student sustains an injury in your class and holds you responsible, or even damages the venue you have hired, you could be facing an expensive compensation claim. Even as someone practising martial arts, there’s a chance you could seriously injure an opponent or someone’s property.
Insure4Sport’s Public Liability protects your legal accountability if a claim is made against you for either injury to another person or accidental property damage. Most venues you teach in will ask for proof that you have Public Liability before allowing you to hold martial arts classes.
- Our Public Liability cover starts at £1 million.
- You’ll also receive FREE Professional Indemnity cover of up to £1 million when you take out Public Liability cover, protecting you against claims that arise from martial arts instructions or advice you’ve given.
On top of this, we provide Participant to Participant Liability cover for instructors. This cover protects you if someone you’re instructing injures another participant during a martial arts class and you are deemed liable. For example, if two students clashed and sustained injuries, they could hold you responsible for not explaining the move correctly.
Personal Accident cover if you require treatment:
Even the most experienced martial artists end up with traumatic injuries that require treatment. Whether you’re attempting to learn a new move and fall, suffer a hard blow from an opponent, or you get hurt whilst teaching, you need to be protected.
Our Personal Accident cover will cover the costs of treatment, whether you require physiotherapy, or need dental treatment. With us, you’ll be back on the mats in no time.
- We provide up to £50,000 Personal Accident cover for martial arts instructors and participants.
- What’s more, we offer up to £750 a week of Loss of Earnings cover for instructors and participants, to make sure you’re financially supported if you are unable to work due to an injury.
Cover for equipment repairs and replacements:
Martial arts equipment can be expensive and if you’re a martial arts enthusiast or an instructor, you are likely to own and use specialist equipment that can be damaged due to the nature of the sport. Whether it’s training aids or clothing, if your equipment is lost, accidentally damaged or stolen, you could be unable to participate or teach.
Our Equipment cover, with a maximum of £2,500 per single item, ensures your martial arts equipment can be repaired or replaced with as little disruption as possible, meaning you’ll be back grappling before you know it.
- Martial arts instructors and participants can cover their equipment against theft, loss, and accidental damage.
- If an item is under a year old – and was bought as new – we’ll replace it new-for-old.
Employers’ Liability if you employ staff:
If you employ staff as part of your martial arts business, you’re legally required to take out Employers’ Liability insurance. This would come into play if an employee were to suffer an injury whilst at work and held you responsible.
Employers’ Liability allows you to meet the costs of the compensation paid due to employee’s injuries, whether they occur on or off-site.
Worldwide cover if you want to teach or practise abroad:
Whether you are jetting off to compete abroad or simply teaching overseas, it’s vital you stay protected.
That’s why we provide you with up to 180 days of cover abroad– so you can have peace of mind and focus on the sport you love.
