Sports Coach Insurance
Why do I need sports coach insurance?
Educating and training people to excel at the sport you love is exciting and stimulating, whatever sport you teach. But teaching inexperienced people new skills or encouraging players to challenge themselves can result in accidents. If you are held responsible, you could end up receiving a claim against you – and a hefty bill.
However, having specialist coach insurance enables you to meet the potential costs of such claims, while ensuring your wellbeing and reputation are protected.
Whether you need Public Liability if a student injures themselves, Equipment cover if your equipment is stolen, or Personal Accident cover if you sustain a serious injury, we’ve got you covered. With our sports coach insurance, you can teach your sport knowing you’re covered against the risks that come with it.
What cover do we offer?

- Up to £50,000 Personal Accident cover
- Loss of Earnings

What does sports coach insurance cover?
Public Liability cover against injury or property damage:
Whatever sport you coach, someone could injure themselves or damage third party property during your session, which could lead to a hefty claim against you.
For instance:
- You might be coaching a cricket team, and one of your players takes a shot which accidentally damages someone’s car.
- You may be teaching dance, and a student slips on a wet floor in the studio and sprains their ankle.
If something like this happened during one of your coaching sessions, you could be held responsible. That’s why you need our Public Liability cover, which protects your legal accountability if a claim is made against you for either injury or accidental property damage. Public Liability is so important that most gyms and sports centres will ask you to prove you have this cover before allowing you to teach on their premises.
Our Public Liability cover is available to both coaches and instructors. You’ll also get £1 million of FREE Professional Indemnity cover when you take out our Public Liability cover. If you give advice to your teams, players or participants, you need this cover. This protects you if, for example, someone suffers an injury as a result of bad advice you have given and claims against you for their injuries.
Personal Accident cover if you require treatment:
Even if you are an experienced coach, you can also suffer injuries. An injury could be a significant financial burden if you don’t have the right insurance.
Whether it’s a minor sprain or a broken bone, our Personal Accident cover makes sure that the financial pain is kept to a minimum by covering the costs of certain types of treatment, such as physiotherapy.
With our Personal Accident cover, hopefully you’ll be back putting players through their paces in no time.
We provide up to £50,000 of Personal Accident cover, to ensure the financial impact of any injuries is kept to a minimum by compensating you for serious injuries or certain treatments you need.
We also offer optional Loss of Earnings cover of up to £750 per week when you take out Personal Accident cover. This will ensure you’re financially supported if you’re unable to work due to an injury you sustained whilst coaching.
Cover for equipment repairs and replacements:
As a coach, you probably rely on a range of valuable equipment to ensure you give the best service you can to your clients or teams. If anything happened to this equipment, you could be out of pocket and potentially unable to work. That is, unless you have Sports Equipment insurance.
Our Equipment cover, with a maximum of £2,500 per single item, ensures your equipment such as a sound system, clothing or coaching props, can be repaired or replaced with as little disruption as possible.
- Coaches and instructors can cover their sports equipment against loss, theft or damage.
- If the item is less than one year old – and was bought new – we’ll replace it new-for-old.
Employers’ Liability if you employ staff:
If you employ other members of staff as part of your coaching business, then by law, you need to have Employers’ Liability insurance. If one of your coaches was injured while working for you, they could hold you responsible for their injuries.
As a result, you could be on the receiving end of a potentially costly compensation claim. We’re here to protect you and coach you through the worst should an accident happen.
Employers’ Liability enables you to meet the costs of a claim due to employee’s injuries, whether they occur on or off-site.
Worldwide if you want to coach or instruct abroad:
If you’re coaching a new team abroad, it’s vital that you stay protected. We created our worldwide cover which covers you for up to 180 days wherever you are in the world so that insurance doesn’t come in between you and your new ventures!

Other details you might want to know about what we cover:
- What sports and classes are covered?
We cover over 270 sports. Check out the full list of sports we cover here.
- What sports and classes are not covered?
Please check our sports we don't cover page. If you can’t find the sport or activity on the list, email us at admin@insure4sport.co.uk or call us on 0800 158 5530.
- Am I covered for sports massage?
Yes – you will be covered for this under a coach insurance policy. What’s more, you can now get standalone sports massage cover by contacting our call centre on the number above.
- Do I need to carry out a risk assessment before holding sessions?
We recommend it – we suggest that you carry out a risk assessment before each session to identify and address any potential hazards.
Whilst it’s not a legal requirement to carry out a risk assessment, we recommend you do this to decrease the likelihood of an accident happening and a claim being made against you.
- I am a newly qualified coach. Will this affect my insurance premium?
Not at all – as long as you hold a qualification recognised by the UK National Governing Body for the Sport. We also now cover coaches who are training, so if you are not yet qualified but want to know if we can still cover you, call our customer service team on 0800 158 5530 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5:30pm).
- Are there restrictions on where I hold my sessions?
We don’t place restrictions on your location – but, if you’re running sessions in public spaces, you may need to request permission from the relevant authorities. We also strongly recommend you conduct risk assessments ahead of teaching all classes or sessions.
What is most important is that you have the appropriate qualifications, beyond that you are covered to take your coaching sessions in the gym, a local park or at a client’s home.
- Can I be covered to teach outside of the UK?
Yes, it’s easy to add Worldwide Cover to your coach insurance policy – so you are protected when running sessions abroad. Unlike some other insurers, our Worldwide cover includes the USA and Canada.
- Am I covered to offer nutritional advice?
Yes – as long as the nutritional advice you are giving is part of your coaching qualification.
- Am I covered for coaching children?
If you have the relevant coaching qualification, we can insure you – unless you are teaching underwater sports such as scuba diving to children who are under eight years old. These children would not be covered.
