What is nail technician insurance?

You may not think of nail technology as a high-risk cosmetic treatment, but as with all small businesses, accidents can still happen.

Specialist nail technician insurance is designed to protect your business against costly claims from clients. It also provides financial protection if anything happens to your equipment or business premises.

Depending on the level of protection you choose, a policy can include cover for theft or damage to your equipment—alongside protection against third-party claims for property damage or personal injury. You can also include buildings cover if you own or are responsible for the premises you operate in.

If you have your own nail salon, you may want to consider nail salon insurance through Ripe.

What type of nail technician insurance should I consider?
    • The level of cover you choose depends on what you want to protect your business against and the risks that come with the treatments you provide. Generally, the three main types of nail technician insurance are:

      • Public and Products Liability—this cover is included on all policies and protects you against third-party claims for personal injury or property damage
      • Employers’ Liability—this cover is a legal requirement if you have employees
      • Equipment Cover—this covers your business equipment if it is damaged or stolen both at and away from your premises

You may also want to include Money Cover to provide financial protection if money belonging to your business is stolen from your premises or in transit. This can be useful for mobile nail technicians that deal in cash.

Buildings Cover is another option if you want to protect a premises you own or are responsible for if the building or contents become damaged.

What insurance should self-employed nail technicians consider?
    • Public and Products Liability is ideal for self-employed nail technicians who either rent a chair in a salon or work from a home-based set-up, as it protects you if you damage third-party property or cause injury to another person whilst at work.

Say you accidentally spill nail glue onto a client’s expensive jacket, or a client suffers an allergic reaction during treatment—both Public Liability and Treatment Risk cover could provide financial protection in these circumstances.

Equipment Cover is another go-to choice for those with stock and equipment they would like to protect both at and away from their premises.

If you own or are responsible for a premises, you may also opt for Buildings Cover for financial protection against accidental damage to any buildings.

What insurance should mobile nail technicians consider?
    • Both Public and Products Liability and Equipment Cover are common insurance choices for mobile nail technicians. They travel to their client’s homes and usually require cover for accidental injuries to their clients, damage to third-party property, and their own equipment.

For example, even if you use high-quality products, a client may still suffer an allergic reaction, or you could spill nail gel onto their expensive carpet. Public Liability could protect you in this instance.

Or a client could accidentally knock your nail lamp onto the floor—Equipment Cover would ensure this is repaired or replaced if damaged.

You may also want to include Money Cover to ensure any cash belonging to your business is covered if it’s stolen during transit.

What kind of insurance should nail salon owners consider?
    • Employers’ Liability insurance is a legal requirement for salon owners, as it covers the businesses’ legal liability to employees if they are injured at work.

For example, if an employee trips on a wet surface and injures themselves, Employers’ Liability cover could prevent your business from suffering a significant financial loss if they decided to make a claim.

Public and Products Liability is also included on all policies and protects the business against third-party claims for personal injury or property damage.

Additional cover options for salon owners include Contents CoverStock Cover, Shop front fixtures and fittings, or Tenants’ improvements Cover.

Can I be a nail technician without a certification?
    • While you don’t require formal certification to become a nail technician, it’s certainly good to have basic training in nail treatments to operate a reputable business.

On top of getting certified, obtaining specialist insurance before providing treatments to clients will ensure your business is protected against claims.
