Why should a beauty therapist consider insurance?
    • There are several reasons why a beauty therapist should consider insurance.

Let’s say a client complains that treatment carried out by you has caused them injury or illness—such as a burn, scarring, or an allergic reaction. Specialist beautician insurance would cover you for any legal fees or compensation awarded to your client if you found to be negligent.

Again, let’s say you work in a busy salon, and a client (or any other person present) trips over your bag or stray equipment cables and badly injures themselves. Public Liability insurance would cover any claims they may make against you. Similarly, you’d also be covered if you visit a client’s home to carry out treatment and accidentally damage their property whilst there.

As a beautician, the chances are you’ll own various bits of expensive equipment, too. Specialist insurance will cover you for theft and accidental damage. If you own a salon that employs multiple beauticians and other members of staff, you also legally required to have Employers’ Liability cover.

What type of insurance should a beauty therapist consider?
    • Beauty therapist insurance comes in various forms depending on the nature of your business.

      Public Liability

This covers your legal liability to third parties (clients and other members of the public) for personal injury or damage to property. With Ripe, you can get Public Liability cover for £1.25m, £2.5m, £5m or £10m, as well as treatment risks for £1.25m, £2.5m and £3m, depending on the size and nature of your beauty business.

      Products Liability

This covers you if you were to supply them with a faulty product, which causes them injury, illness, or damage to property.

      Employers’ Liability

This is a legal requirement for most businesses with employees. It covers your legal liability for injury to staff while working for you. With Ripe, you can choose £10m Employers’ Liability cover.

      Equipment Cover

This covers your beautician equipment if it is damaged or stolen, either at or away from your business premises. If you are mobile or a freelancer then you can be covered up to £10k, however salons can be covered up to £250k, dependent on contents, stock and shop front, fixtures and tenants’ improvements.

      Buildings Cover

This is an optional layer of cover for the building you work in. If you own your salon, buildings cover can protect you if the building or its contents are damaged.

      Money Cover

This is another optional extra layer of cover that provides financial protection should money belonging to your business be stolen from your premises or in transit. Money cover is particularly useful if you’re a mobile beautician that deals predominantly with cash.

Beauty therapist insurance: self-employed vs staff beautician
    • The type of insurance you require will also depend on what type of beauty therapist you are, and the nature of your business.

For example, if you own a salon that employs people, Employers’ Liability cover is a legal requirement. However, you won’t necessarily need this level of cover if you’re a self-employed or freelance beauty therapist.
