6 of the best motorhomes covers

Extra protection for your motorhome during a lengthier lay-up? You need a cover. Something that will offer protection from all weathers—hot, cold, wet and dry—as well as dust, tree sap, bird droppings, leaves, too much direct sunlight, black streaking...it’s almost an endless list.

It’s not just the paintwork that will benefit from such protection. It’s also good for any seals as well as potential damage to internal fittings, for example the sun’s effect on curtains. You’ll even be protecting your motorhome from prying eyes

Here are our top six motorhome cover suppliers and some key information on what they offer.

1. Pro-Tec

Price: £410 (campervan/van conversion)/£520 (coachbuilt)/£540 (A-class)

Pros: Superior quality fabric, choice of three colours, personalised logo option, three-year warranty, total UK design and manufacture

Cons: Four-week wait time from order to delivery

The Pro-Tec difference? A specialist with over 25 years of motorhome cover manufacturing experience, it offers bespoke covers, all made to individual order, so you get the perfect fit for your own motorhome, with the also going as far as offering its own cover/vehicle cleaner.

All covers use Pro-Tec’s own specially developed fabric—designed to be exceptionally breathable and including a patented membrane—along with the company’s EasyFit system (it includes poles). You also get a breathable storage bag.

The prices here include delivery plus, if you’re a Caravan and Motorhome Club member, you qualify for a 5% discount.

2. Specialised Covers

Price: From £499

Pros: Fully waterproof and breathable fabric with non-scratch backing, choice of three colours,

Cons: Price, £350 extra charge for vehicle not on database

Up there with the best as far as quality is concerned, this company also supplies covers direct to many of the UK’s largest motorhome (and caravan) manufacturers, as well as cars and more.

If you buy privately, you’ll be getting a tailor-made cover for a perfect fit to your own motorhome.

In the business for over 40 years, Specialised Covers  says its fabric is both fully waterproof and breathable thanks to a membrane that allows condensation to evaporate rather than building up.

There’s extra to pay if your vehicle isn’t on the Specialised Covers database, but this can be offset if you’re prepared to visit the West Yorkshire factory for a measure-up.

Also, it’s an additional £45 for a Velcro fitting at the back that allows the whole end panel to be lifted for easy access. Access to fittings like solar panels can also be arranged.

Typical lead times are around four weeks.

3. Fiamma Cover Premium

Price: £469 (Cover Premium M)/£499 (Cover Premium L)/£160 (Cover Top)

Pros: Fiamma brand means spares will be easy to obtain, manageable weights

Cons: Not tailored to individual vehicle designs

Italian accessories giant Fiamma’s extensive portfolio extends to covers for coachbuilt and A-class motorhomes as well as van conversions. This includes the Cover Top, which covers just the upper half of the vehicle, and comes in one size only.

Cover Premium (for all coachbuilts) comes in two sizes—M, for vehicles up to 7.1m long; and L, for those up to 8m. Both have the same width (2.59m) and height (2.74m) dimensions. You also get four plastic buckles for lower body fixing, plus three zips each side to help accessing the motorhome, along with Velcro to fix back the side panels when you want them open. Air vents will help with ventilation as well as alleviating any build-ups of moisture. Weights are 10kg (size M) and 11kg (L).

4. Maypole Motorhome Cover

Price: From £194.99

Pros: Non-abrasive, water-resistant material, supplied with storage bag

Cons: For coachbuilts only

Maypole supplies six versions of its Motorhome Cover, depending on the length of your vehicle. It’s for coachbuilts and starts off with the MP9421 for low profiles up to 5.7m long (Maypole suggests you go up a size if it’s for an overcab model). Top-of-the-range is the MP9426, for vehicles up to 8m.

Features to note start with the water-resistant, breathable, four-ply fabric in non-woven polypropylene. It’s also non-abrasive so any movement is less likely to stretch the exterior of your motorhome.

Other features that will help towards a good fit include an elasticated hem, zips at each corner, plus nylon straps and buckles at the sides, front and rear.  There are also zips on both sides, for door access.

Double-stitched seams suggest a bit of extra durability, reflectors help visibility, especially at night.

5. Just Kampers Luxury Breathable Van Cover (J29560)

Price: £129.95

Pros: General cover for VW-based elevating roof campers, low price

Cons: May not be suitable for vehicles with side awnings

Major VW campervan accessories specialist Just Kampers includes some basic covers in its range—with generic designs for Volkswagens from T2 onwards.

The example here is designed to fit short-wheelbase T4, T5 and T6-based elevating roof campervan conversions (there’s a cheaper variant but it’s for vans only).

It uses a three-layer breathable, water resistant non-woven polypropylene fabric with an elasticated hem and three adjustable straps going under the vehicle from side to side and a one to run its whole length. There are four zipped door openings (to cater for the cab doors and sliding doors on either side).

6. CoverPRO 4-Ply Premium Motorhome Cover

Price: £169.99

Pros: Lots of adjustment, supplied with carry bag

Cons: For coachbuilts only

From leisure vehicles accessories wholesaler Crusader, the CoverPRO comes in six guises, depending on the length of your motorhome. All are for vehicles up to 2.3m wide.

It’s a generic design, but adjustable straps on the front, back and sides will help ensure a good fit. It’s made from non-woven, 4-ply polypropylene that’s bonded to strengthen its stress points and has zips at each corner to help with the fitting process. Large openings on each side are also zipped, also with ventilation panels.

Six tips for using motorhome covers

Once you’ve picked one of the best motorhome covers on the market, you’ll want to know how to put it to good use and how to ensure that it lasts. We’ve listed six of our top tips to help you:

  1. A proper cover can make great sense when you’re storing your motorhome for extended periods, eg overwinter. The best covers will offer breathability so that moisture is wicked away rather than getting trapped.
  2. A thorough clean and dry for your motorhome before you put a cover in it will help reduce the possibility of scratching, no matter how minimal. Likewise, keep your cover as clean as possible (check manufacturer guidance here). Some users like to put on a coating of overwintering fluid, too, to put a barrier layer between the cover and paintwork.
  3. Following on from the above, make sure your cover has a soft interior lining.
  4. Breathability is another key factor. It helps stop build-up of moisture, mould and mildew, with the best covers offering a mix of high water resistance and breathability. Some manufacturers like to quote a hydrostatic head rating to show the levels of water resistance on offer. The higher the figure here, the better. Look for a number in excess of 10,000mm.
  5. Well-established brands means you’ll have more luck sourcing replacement parts such as buckles and straps.
  6. Let us know at Ripe if you do intend storing your vehicle for lengthy periods.
